Bravo Company was awarded the
Valorous Unit Award by the Commanding General
of the 1st Cav Div (Airmobile), Major General John Tolson, during a ceremony
in February 1968, at Quang Tri, Vietnam. A Valorous Unit Award is the
second highest unit decoration which may be bestowed on a US Army Unit, the
highest being the Presidential Unit Citation. The degree of heroism required
for the Valorous Unit Award is the same as that which would justify award of
the Silver Star to an individual under similar circumstances.
Bravo Company received this award for extraordinary heroism in action
against a large-scale enemy force during 16-17 May 1966. Not much was known
about this action until we finally obtained a copy of the after action
report and all the recommendations leading to the approval of this award in
2012. The following documents and photographs provides a complete
description of this award starting with the extraordinary acts of gallantry
by Bravo Company troopers, the recommendations and approval process for this
award by the chain of command, and concluding with the official presentation
of this Valorous Unit Award to Bravo Company by the 1st Cavalry Division
